New Brunswick’s UEZ: It’s the Key to Growing Your Business!

Doing business in New Brunswick is a whole lot more affordable and profitable with the designation of our Urban Enterprise Zone. The UEZ is an area within our City where you can qualify for financial incentives to grow your business and expand employment.

We are very proud to participate in New Jersey’s nationally acclaimed UEZ program. Since 1984, it has been an engine for driving urban revitalization and economic growth. The UEZ program, a proven success in 37 municipalities throughout the state, has generated nearly 70,000 jobs and over $750 million for reinvestment projects since its inception.

The New Brunswick UEZ is a magnet for shoppers who pay just 3.5% sales tax, and that sales tax stays right here in our City for capital improvements and economic development activities.

New Brunswick businesses, residents and consumers all benefit from the UEZ through expanded employment opportunities, reduced sales taxes, the re-investment of sales taxes and an influx of non-resident shoppers.

If you qualify as a UEZ Member, you will enjoy these benefits:

Increased profits

  • 3.5% sales tax: a huge incentive for local and out-of-town consumers to shop with YOU. By advertising the 3.5% sales tax, you can gain a tremendous advantage over your competition, gain new customers and retain established customers.
  • Plus, the sales tax you collect stays right here in New Brunswick to be invested in business improvements that will further enhance our City as a hub for shopping and small business opportunities.

Lower costs

  • You can purchase goods for conducting and improving your business sales tax free. This includes office and building supplies, business equipment and fixtures.
  • A tax credit of up to $1500 is available for non-retail businesses for every new employee hired.
  • Customized job training assistance from the New Jersey Department of Labor in partnership with the City of New Brunswick.

Are you ready to grow your business?

Qualifying for UEZ involves just three steps:

  1. You complete a brief UEZ Application and return it to the UEZ Coordinator.
  1. The UEZ Coordinator submits your application to the State UEZ Authority for approval.
  1. Approved applicants receive a State Tax Certificate authorizing the reduced sales tax rate and tax-exempt purchases.

*There is no cost to apply for or participate in the UEZ program.

Business Plan Writing Assistance

New Brunswick offers free business plan assistance, including how-to materials and consultation to discuss issues common to starting a business, obtaining financing and marketing a business. It has been estimated that 4 out of 5 start-up businesses fail within the first two years. Business professionals don’t plan to fail; they simply fail to plan. It is important that business owners create a business plan by which they can determine the feasibility of their venture and weigh their business’ performance. We can help you create a plan.

Site Location Assistance

We work closely with local commercial real estate brokers and property owners to identify available retail, office and industrial space available for rent. We can provide businesses with leads on these properties and help facilitate securing new space.
