The Municipal Code establishes a Department of Law within the City of New Brunswick's municipal government. This department is directed by the city attorney who is appointed by the mayor with the advice and consent of the city council.

As stated in the municipal code the city attorney serves as the legal advisor to the mayor, the council, and all department heads except as otherwise specified in the charter.
