Play S.A.F.E. Celebrates Another Successful Summer

Approximately 1,300 New Brunswick children spent the past six summer weeks playing, learning, taking day trips and having fun with their friends through the City of New Brunswick’s annual Play S.A.F.E. program.

Play S.A.F.E (Summer Activities for Everyone) is a free, comprehensive summer recreation program offered by the City of New Brunswick’s Youth Services System to all New Brunswick children between the ages of 6-12.

2018 marked the 27th year of our offering of this community program and throughout the summer, our campers played games and sports, swam, participated in music and dance activities, read books, went on day trips and participated in academic preparation, nutrition and drug awareness programs.

This year also marked an exciting expansion of our soccer, gymnastics and dance programs, thanks to support from the Rutgers Community Health Foundation.

Play S.A.F.E. celebrates the end of each year’s program with a Field Day celebration at Buccleuch Park, and on August 9, all Play S.A.F.E. kids spent the day enjoying a slew of games in the park, eating a special picnic lunch and cooling off in the spray from a fire truck.

Nutrition is an important component of Play S.A.F.E and every child in the program received daily free nutritious lunches, furnished through the federal Summer Food Service Program.

Rutgers Against Hunger’s Snack Pack program also helped to provide nourishment to our campers through the donation of 25,000 snack packs throughout the six weeks of Play S.A.F.E.

Snack packs consist of healthy, kid-friendly foods and are packed by incoming Rutgers University students during each of the college’s incoming students orientation sessions.

This is the third summer in which Rutgers Against Hunger has delivered snacks to our campers through the Snack Pack program, and we are thankful for their partnership on this positive initiative to benefit our kids.
