Community Garden Program Comes to Recreation Park

The City of New Brunswick and Rutgers University have forged a new partnership to bring a community garden program to Recreation Park.

Rutgers Cooperative Extension and the New Brunswick Community Farmers Market will oversee a community garden program in Recreation Park’s garden plots, located next to the basketball courts on Pine Street.

Community members can sign up to use one of 26 8×12 plots that will be available to plant crops of their choosing, aided by supplies, seeds and support from the City of New Brunswick and Rutgers.

This year’s program session runs from approximately August 1- October 31, 2018, meaning there is still ample time to grow late summer and fall vegetables to be enjoyed!

This new arrangement is a continuation of the City’s longtime partnership with Rutgers University to bring programs and improvements to our shared community, such as the nearby New Brunswick Community Farmers Market, where Rutgers Cooperative Extension also helps local community members maintain lush garden plots.

A successful community garden program has grown out of a similar partnership agreement at Feaster Park between the City of New Brunswick and Unity Square, for care of a community garden on the park’s Throop Avenue side.

The City of New Brunswick has 13 community gardens throughout.

Anyone who is interested in participating in the community garden program at Recreation Park can contact Rutgers Cooperative Extension by phone at (848) 932-3501 or by email at info@nbcfarmersmarket.com to learn more.
