Free Income Tax Filing Assistance Available at the Library

Taxpayers may now make appointments for free assistance with filing their 2017 income tax returns at the New Brunswick Free Public Library.

Volunteers from Beta Alpha Psi, the Accounting and Finance Honors Society at Rutgers, will help taxpayers file online, by appointment only, on Fridays and Saturdays from February 2 to April 7, 2018.

This annual service is sponsored by VITA, the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, and is intended for those of low to moderate income.

The volunteers are only able to file current standard returns, no itemized deductions, special forms, or returns for previous years.

For an appointment, please call the library at (732) 745-5108 ext. 25, or stop by the library’s Main Desk.

When you come to your tax-filing session, please bring Social Security cards and ID for you and any dependents, your W-2 forms and any tax forms sent to you by the government, records of expenses you want to declare, and a copy of last year’s tax returns if available.

A more detailed list of what to bring can be found on the library website.

Please understand that the library is only the site for this service and library staff cannot answer tax-related questions.

Beta Alpha Psi is the Accounting and Finance Honors Society at the Rutgers Business School. The organization is highly selective and focuses on academic excellence, leadership, community service, and  social networking. Along with maintaining high academic standards and exhibiting leadership skills, members of BAP are also deeply committed to community service.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) is a national program providing free assistance to low-income, elderly, limited English proficient and disabled individuals who require assistance in preparing their tax returns and cannot afford the services of a paid professional tax preparer.
