Spring Cleaning doesn’t have to be limited to the house – Urban Cleanup Week has opportunities to help clean litter, too!

Urban Cleanup Week is a seven-day initiative that encourages all citizens of the City of New Brunswick to take an active role in the cleanliness of their town. Each day has a different theme, all centered around litter cleanup, recycling and the importance of a clean community.

On Monday, April 17, businesses throughout the City are encouraged to do their part through ‘Make Your Storefront Look Great Day’ by cleaning up litter and graffiti on their property and washing their sidewalks and their windows. They are also encouraged to clean up to two feet into the street.

Tidy-Up Tuesday follows on April 18, in which nonprofits and houses of worship are encouraged to do litter cleanups on their properties. A few minutes spent cleaning up litter can make a big difference in the appearance of the neighborhood!

Wednesday, April 19 marks the New Brunswick DPW’s Earth Day event, during which residents may drop off old TVs, computers, paint and paint-related items at the DPW between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. While there, they can pick up 20 free biodegradable leaf bags per property as well as a free cooking oil recycling container. The New Brunswick DPW is located at 400 Jersey Ave.

School kids from around New Brunswick will take litter cleanup into their own hands during School Kids Sweep-Up Day on Thursday, April 20. This all-day event entails a litter cleanup and education about keeping our community clean, followed by a Clean City Celebration and the annual “Slam Dunk the Junk” basketball tournament.

Flower-Up Friday will provide free flowers to the first 200 New Brunswick residents to visit Livingston Park Nursery between the hours of 7  a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, April 21. Each resident will be able to pick out two free packs of annual flowers to take home. Additional flowers will be available for purchase at a discounted rate. The nursery is located at 1036 How Lane.

Are you interested in participating in a cleanup in town? Saturday, April 22 is Large Volunteer Group Cleanup Day, in which groups will conduct litter cleanups around New Brunswick. Please call the New Brunswick DPW at (732) 745-5254 for more information on cleanups or to organize your own!

Residents are asked to help close out Urban Cleanup Week on Sunday, April 23 with Sweep-up Sunday, in which they can clean up litter on their front lawns, sidewalks, curbs and 24” into the street.

Urban Cleanup Week makes a big difference in the amount of litter in our community and encourages residents to continue these behaviors year-round for the betterment of our City. Please feel free to contact the DPW or the Mayor’s Office at (732) 745-5004 if you would like to get involved.
