The City of New Brunswick Fire Department welcomed its newest members at a swearing-in ceremony Friday afternoon. Mayor Jim Cahill presided over the swearing-in of nine new recruits, who all recently completed their city-run training. Calling themselves "The Fine Nine", the new firefighters will immediately assume their new roles as City firefighters. The newest firefighters are August DeSantis IV, Thomas J. Dobkowski, Joseph S. Karbowski, John Keefe, Adam Kormondy, Bryan Latham Sr., Shane Mendez, Robert Rawls Jr. (son of the current fire director), and Gary Sharpe Jr.

To accommodate the larger-than-normal crowd of well-wishers, the ceremony was moved from City Hall to the Middle School Auditorium. Among the dignitaries in attendance were Middlesex County Surrogate Kevin Hoagland, New Brunswick City Council President John Anderson, Council Vice-President Suzanne Sicora-Ludwig, and Councilwoman Rebecca Escobar.
