Federal Funds Available to Assist Residents with Back Rent Payments

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (December 22, 2020) – With many households economically impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, the City of New Brunswick has allocated federal grant dollars to assist residents in paying their back rent.

Starting today, qualified tenants can apply for the grant which pays up to THREE months of owed rent. Tenants must apply for the assistance, and if approved, the funds will be paid directly to their respective landlord.

“With the New Year approaching, these grant funds address two critical needs,” adds New Brunswick Mayor Jim Cahill. “They help renters who want to be in good standing by eliminating at least a portion of any owed monies, and the funds connect landlords with much-needed revenue so they can maintain properties and continue to provide residents with safe housing.”

The first round of applications will be accepted today, December 22 through Tuesday, December 29, 2020.  Should any grant funds remain, additional applications will be accepted in January 2021 (dates to apply will be announced.)

The maximum assistance per applicant is $7,500.
