Emergence of 17-Year Cicada Observed in Middlesex County
(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) June 18, 2021 - After a 17-year wait, billions of large, very noisy, winged, red-eyed insects known as periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.) are emerging from the ground, occupying large swaths of the eastern United States. They'll overrun many yards, pelt windows, fly into people, clog storm drains and basically wreak buggy havoc. They are now present in Middlesex County.
They are not harmful to people, animals or crops.
