Human and Community Services
With an emphasized quality-of-life focus, the Department of Human and Community Services oversees numerous quality-of-life issues that are of critical importance to residents.
The department is comprised of two divisions; the Division of Human Services and the Division of Community Services.
- Human Services is responsible for managing the City’s emergency shelters, working with outside social service agencies on how to best serve residents, managing Parks and Recreation programs and facilities, and overseeing international activities and arts initiatives.
- Community Services will enforce housing compliance rules and regulations, ensure proper disposal of solid waste and recycling, and coordinate the City’s animal control efforts.
Keith Jones II, the Mayor's former Chief of Staff, heads up this department. Mr. Jones previously served as a Community Organization Specialist for the City and has long been involved in connecting residents and those in need with vital services. This includes overseeing of New Brunswick’s “CODE BLUE” warming center program, the Dignity Center at Memorial Stadium and countless food distribution events. “This department will give us the opportunity to serve and advocate in a more direct way,” says Jones.
