Rent Control


Most rental units in New Brunswick are regulated by the City’s           
Rent Control Ordinance.

Rental increases are restricted to the annual rental increase allowed by ordinance, unless:

  • The unit was approved for a vacancy decontrol
  • The unit is classified as exempt by the rent control ordinance


ALL REGULATED UNITS MUST REGISTER BY APRIL 1,  EVERY YEAR!
2020 Allowable Annual Increase:     2.5%
2019 Allowable Annual Increase:       2.5%

2018 Allowable Annual Increase:       2.5 %
2017 Allowable Annual Increase:       2.5 %
2016 Allowable Annual Increase:       2.6%
2015 Allowable Annual Increase:       2.6%
2014 Allowable Annual Increase:       2.5%


 

Registration Fee $30  per unit as of January 1, 2020
Late Fee:  If filed after April 30:  $10  per unit additional ($40 total per unit)
Vacancy Decontrol Application Fee: $20.00  per rental unit
Owners of unregistered units are subject to summonses and fines.
